WASHINGTON, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama intends to give "a major speech on the financial crisis" in New York's financial section Monday, the White House said Thursday.

A statement from the White House press office said Obama will also address his commitment to "winding down" the government's role in the nation's finance industry.

"One year to the day after Lehman Brothers collapsed and precipitated a financial crisis that reverberated across the globe, President Obama will deliver a major speech on the financial crisis at Federal Hall in New York City at midday on Monday," the statement said.

"He will discuss the aggressive steps the administration has taken to bring the economy back from the brink, the commitment to winding down the government's role in the financial sector and the actions the United States and the global community must take to prevent a crisis like this from ever happening again," it said.

The press office said the event will be pooled for television.

The financial crisis address comes less than a week after the president addressed a joint session of Congress on healthcare reform.
