NEW YORK, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Nick Johnson had a pair of
two-run singles to help break the game open in the late innings
Thursday and lead Florida past the New York Mets 13-4.
The Marlins won their third straight and moved within five
games of Philadelphia for the lead in the National League East.
Florida and Philadelphia have six meetings remaining, including the
final three games of the season.
Florida held only a 6-4 lead going into the seventh inning,
but the Marlins scored three times in that frame, with Johnson
contributing one of his two-run hits.
He had another one in the eighth, during which Florida
scored four times. The Marlins had 16 hits overall.
Florida starter Sean West lasted only four innings and the
win went to Burke Badenhop (7-4), who gave up a run in two innings.
Bobby Parnell (3-8) issued two bases-loaded walks during a
three-run first and suffered the loss by giving up five runs on
seven hits in five innings.
