MATARAM, Indonesia, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Police in Indonesia's
West Nusa Tenggara province say 56 illegal immigrants from
Afghanistan were being held after being apprehended by navy
officers.
West Nusa Tenggara police said the immigrants, reportedly
all male, were found aboard a wooden boat by a naval patrol near the
island of Lombok Thursday night. They were to be transferred to the
custody of the U.N. High Commission for Refugees and the
International Organization for Migration, The Jakarta Post reported
Friday.
Authorities also have four Indonesian nationals in custody
on charges they were smuggling the immigrants to Australia.
West Nusa Tenggara police spokesman Cmdr. Tribudi Pengastuti
said at least 60 attempts at human smuggling were foiled this year
in the Indonesian province.
The Jakarta Post said most illegal immigrants come from
Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq.
