Trial on weapons cache delayed     (World News)
07/27/2010 01:54 P (EST)
SEATTLE, July 27 (UPI) -- A U.S. judge has postponed the trial of a Canadian arrested on weapons charges to give investigators more time to check his background, officials say.

Oliver King, allegedly born Hamid Malekpour in Tehran, was arrested May 19 at a storage facility in Ferndale, Wash., where police found 27 military-style firearms, including a .50-caliber sniper rifle, numerous semiautomatic assault-style weapons, handguns, ammunition and magazines, The Seattle Times reported Monday.

King, 35, of Vancouver, British Columbia, has been charged with being an alien in possession of firearms and ammunition, and lying to government agents, the newspaper said.

Prosecutors had asked for more time before a trial date, saying the investigation is complex and involves witnesses in several countries.

Interpol records indicate King, a licensed Canadian gun dealer, has a criminal history in Denmark including firearms violations, court documents show.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Roe said the government would probably seek a new indictment on additional charges.

King's lawyer acknowledges the government is looking for terrorist connections in his client's past.

"They're looking into it and, if they find it, I'm sure they'll announce it from the rooftops," Michael Nance said.
