U.S.-born Latinos more Internet savvy     (Science & Space News)

WASHINGTON, July 28 (UPI) -- Native-born Latinos in the United States use cellphones and the Internet more than their foreign-born counterparts, a study indicates.

An estimated 85 percent of native-born Latinos use the Internet, while only 50 percent of foreign-born Latinos go online, a survey of Latinos age 16 and older conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center showed. Native-born Latinos also use cellphones more -- 80 percent -- compared with the foreign-born, at 72 percent.

The survey also indicates a technology gap between Latinos and non-Latinos: Only 64 percent of Latinos age 18 and older use the Internet, whereas 78 percent of non-Latinos in that age group go online, Pew said.

Latinos are the largest and youngest minority in the United States, representing more than 15 percent of the total population.

More than 2,000 Latinos age 16 and older participated in the 2009 National Survey of Latinos, conducted Aug. 5 to Sept. 16, 2009. The survey has a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.
