MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Denard Span singled in the go-ahead run during a two-run seventh inning Friday and the Minnesota Twins held on to edge Texas 4-3.
The Twins extended their American League Central lead over second-place Chicago to four games after the White Sox had their contest in Boston postponed by Hurricane Earl.
Minnesota trailed by a run heading into the bottom of the second but Danny Valencia reached on a one-out single off starter Derek Holland (2-3) and Jason Repko drew a walk. J.J. Hardy's single brought in Tolbert with the tying run and Span followed with a base hit to right that scored Repko.
Texas put runners on first and third with one out in the eighth but closer Matt Capps came on to strike out Nelson Cruz and get Ian Kinsler on a fielder's choice grounder to end the threat.
Capps stayed in the game in the ninth and picked up his 34th save, preserving the win for reliever Alex Burnett (2-2). Burnett gave up a run and a hit in 1 1/3 innings.
Minnesota starter Matt Fox made his major league debut and gave up two runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings.
